Such pride makes it emotionally challenging for any man to come to terms with anything that will suggest erectile dysfunction of the genital organ, prostatic enlargement (BPH) and prostatic cancer leading to prostatectomy. This is often times the sad consequence of prostatic cancer. Prostate enlargement and erectile dysfunction (ED) are separate problems. Both increase with age, but one causes problems in the bathroom and the other in the bedroom. However, the two are somewhat linked. Certain treatments that relieve enlarged prostate gland can cause ED and other sexual side effects.
What is prostatic enlargement (BPH)?
The prostate gland is located below the bladder in men and produces fluid components of semen. Over half of men ages 60 and above have enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition is sometimes called benign prostatic hyperplasia or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It is not known exactly why this enlargement occurs. However, BPH is not cancer and does not cause cancer. Some men have BPH symptoms while others do not. The prostate gland grows throughout a man's life, starting at puberty and again from age 25 onward. Typically, there are no symptoms from an enlarged prostate before age 40. Up to 90% of men have symptoms of BPH by age 85, but only about one-third of men with BPH symptoms are bothered by the symptoms. No one knows why the prostate continues to enlarge throughout a man's life. Hormones like testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estrogen may be involved in regulating the growth of the prostate. Having a vasectomy and sexual activity do not increase the risk of getting BPH. It is also not understood why some men have symptoms with BPH while others do not.
Medical science knows there is an enlargement but is yet to know what causes the enlargement of the prostatic. The prostatic is definitely an organ tissue with muscle linings. The muscles of the prostate also ensure that the semen is forcefully pressed into the urethra and then expelled outwards during ejaculation. The make-up of every organ tissue differ from organ to organ to sooth their varying function.
Enlarged prostate is fairly common in older men and more likely to develop with advancing age, particularly after age 40.
The prevalence of BPH is about 10 percent for men in their thirties, and 20 percent for men in their forties, according to a 2005 report in the journal Reviews in Urology.
It rises as high as 60 percent for men in their sixties, and up to 80 to 90 percent for men in their seventies and eighties, according to the 2005 report.
In 2010, BPH affected 210 million men worldwide, or about 6 percent of the male population, according to a 2012 report in The Lancet.
The number of people with BPH is expected to increase significantly in the next few decades because of the growing elderly population and increasing life expectancy across the globe, according to the 2005 report.
It has become an increasing concern in family health care
Probable assumptions: Can it be that with advancing age and a less active life, the prostrate gland collapses on itself as a result of weakened muscle lining? Since every living organism has the propensity to grow and can become flabby or saggy as a result of loss of strength or tone, can this also affect the prostatic?. If prostatic enlargement is the collapse of the muscle lining, how can it be hereditary? Is a certain lifestyle making it more likely for some men to develop prostatic disorder while some others don’t? Can all these be prevented if the prostatic can be kept perked and toned throughout the aging period a man? Can the prostatic be kept perked and toned by exercising? Which form of exercise can reach the prostrate gland?
Yoga Posture for Prostatic Enlargement (PPE)
For many the thought of yoga conjures the feeling of out of bounds. Yoga like aerobics as an exercise has health benefits. Therefore before consuming self with such feeling, it will worth your while to know that there are handful of yoga posture that are used therapeutically in alternative medicine. Two of such is the “abdominal lift and abdominal ridge” postures. While these two have their health benefits, attention will be giving only to “abdominal ridge” posture.
“Abdominal Ridge” Pose: Just as it sounds, you form a ridge on your abdomen. Possible? Yes! However note that on a flabby saggy abdomen, you cannot achieve this. You should do this when your stomach is empty. Your ability to keep the posture long enough depends on how long you can hold your breath because the pressure is released the moment you breath out. It can be done standing crouching on your laps or lying on your back, legs stretched out and your trunk slightly raised upwards. If you have constant abdominal pain, advisable you check with you doctor first. Now let's go through the steps:
- Ensure your abdominal muscles are proper toned or else start up with couple of legs up and trunk up exercises for couple of days.
- Crouch on your laps while standing
- Take couple of deep breaths and then lock up your breath.
- Continue contracting the abdominal muscles until they form the ridge. (Note: as a first timer you’ll not achieve the ridge but you’ve set the rhythm for it. How long will you’ve to keep trying before getting the ridge? It depends on your determination. The good thing is, the abdominal muscles responds to repeated contraction and voluntarily claps together to form the ridge.)
The start up for “abdominal ridge” posture while lying on your back is slightly different:
- Lie flat on your back and feel relaxed. Again ensure your abdominal muscles are properly toned or else start up with couple of legs up and trunk up exercises for couple of days.
- Take couple of breathes while lying flat on your back.
- Keep your legs stretched out forward.
- As you raise your trunk slightly off the floor lock your breath and contract the abdominal muscle until they form the ridge. (The same Note is applicable here.)
Benefits of “Abdominal Ridge” Pose: this pose is good for any who wants to achieve a flat perked abdomen. It forms the frame work for six pack for you fellows who are desirous of having six pack. For women a sure way to keep a flattened stomach after delivery (throw away the girdle). Tommy fat burner. Now let's understand why this posture is probably good for prostatic health.
When archived and held on as long as you can hold your breathe, you feel the pressure pushing through the bladder. Since the prostate gland is just directly below the bladder, the pressure also reaches it and you can even feel on your testicles. Any moment you urinate after an abdominal ridge posture, you’ll pass out the semen fluid that has been pushed from the prostate gland to the Urhethra.

Who should do an “abdominal ridge” pose? In my opinion every man and woman can do it. However, it takes a man who really want to a make difference with regards to prostate gland enlargement and or cancer to follow through the process repeatedly until he is relaxed with the posture. Since there are no symptom, it's diagnosed when it's late already, the enlargement has taken place. As to whether it can heal men with already enlarged prostatic/cancer is still work in progress. However I can say you loose nothing trying it. Anything that can take the surgeon’s knife away from you is worth trying. Anything that can keep medication that leads to erectile dysfunction is worth trying. Anything that keeps your prostate gland perked and toned is worth the effort.
