The word positure is not in the dictionary but it's my coinage of two words ergonomically placed as they are the concept behind the science of ergonomics. The two words are position and posture. Every tools, materials and accessories are designed bearing in mind the impact on human positure ergonomics. Some redesigning has been effected when ergonomically, it's observed that a certain design will impact negatively on the human positure ergonomics

The intent here is not to write about ergonomics of designs but positure ergonomics of humans for which the science of ergonomics came to be. Ergonomist should be applauded for their pains taking effort at considering positures ergonomics of humans in effecting designs of all kinds. While so much intelligence is put in ergonomic designs, the human user is either ill prepared or is unaware of positure ergonomics. It becomes counter productive that any has an ergonomic chair in the office without considering positure ergonomics. It is counter productive that one drives an ergonomic automobile without considering positure ergonomics. One can sleep on an orthopedic bed and still wake up with pains. The use of any ergonomic resource does not imply ease of use nor safety when the user does not think positure ergonomics.

Several multi-national companies spends huge sums in ensuring that it's staff have state of the art ergonomic office equipments. Most of these companies have stringent safety roles. The expectation is that it's staff should not have positure ergonomics related complications. However, the sad reality is that a handful of the staff are yet taking offs for treatment because of positure ergonomics related complications. So where is the problem?  

Safety experts will always emphasize that safety is an individual responsibility. So it's not about safety roles or gadgets that are put in place but whether individuals will think safety. Similarly, the ease and safe benefit of ergonomic resources depends on personally recognizing positure ergonomics. 

Why think positure ergonomics? The reason for thinking positure ergonomics is in the function of the spine in the skeletal system. “The major function of the vertebral column is protection of the spinal cord; it also provides stiffening for the body and attachment for the pectoral and pelvic girdles and many muscles. In humans an additional function is to transmit body weight in walking, standing, sitting and, performing any other task”- Positure ergonomics. The focus is on the spine. The length of the spine is to be kept upright irrespective of the task and place. If thought is not giving to positure ergonomics, we may block blood supply to some regions of our body. Muscles may tear or snap. Disrupt nervous system and even sprain or brake some of our skeletal frame. We end up also becoming badly shaped. Therefore, for every correct position there is a correct posture.   

Now let's give thought to some positure ergonomics from where it begin, standing and walking to some other day to day activities. 


Humans are gregarious in nature so there is always the need to meet and associate with people. You may desire to have a short or long distance walk. There is the “Global Corporate Challenge” GCC that some corporate organizations for health reasons, encourage its staff to participate in. While majority may enjoy walking, it can become a major health hazard if consideration is not giving to positure ergonomics. Some may have unconsciously developed a faulty pattern of walking and may be suffering the painful effect. After walking for a while you may desire to stand a little. That little stand can also constitute health hazard. Maybe you’re now becoming positure ergonomic conscious as to how to walk and stand the correct way. The truth is most people end up standing the way they walk. Note that the head is tilted forward in both stand and walking. In a short while the individual will wear braces round the neck. Even that will not help if the individual does not apply self to positure ergonomics. All these wrong positures ends up in badly formed body frames. If that doesn't border you, the recurring skeletal pain experienced in the long run should make it worth your while to think positure ergonomics


Global studies show, on average, we sit 7.7 hours a day, and some results estimate people sit up to 15 hours a day. Also give thought to dense traffic prone regions. Wherever you may live, it's apparent that we sit more than we stand or walk. Therefore, it's pertinent we think positure ergonomics while sitting to a task in the office, driving to and from our places of work or business, reclining at home and leisure parks. The best kind of chairs does not necessarily help when positure ergonomics is disregarded. Maybe you already know the positure ergonomics for sitting but are you consistent at it? Positure ergonomics sitting should be a pattern not a moment exercise. Take a look at the positure ergonomics sitting:

Driving for some is what their daily task is all about while for others it's driving to and from places of work or business as well as recreation. There are also wrong positures that majority have jealously held on to that is wrecking their life's. Look at the illustrative picture and think of your positure ergonomics while driving:

The ergonomics of modern automobile allows for proper positure ergonomics but the problem is the one driving. Likely the body pains you’re battling with right now is traceable to wrong positure ergonomics while driving. Will you want to correct it at this time?


A common work tool at places of work in corporate establishments are desktop computers and laptops. The gsm phones usage is another concern for positure ergonomics. Repeated wrong positure ergonomics of use of tools and accessories also leads to permanent deformities. So it matters a lot whether your positure is right or wrong when using electronic devices in the office. There is recommended right angle to view your computer screen:

The use of smartphones and other handheld devices also requires conscious effort for correct positure. The angle of tilt of the head either forward or sideways can impact part of the spine that terminates at the head. Some profession has to do with attending to customers on the phone almost throughout the working hours. Placing the hand piece on the shoulder and tilting the head to the side on the hand piece is as damaging as bending forward to text message or read. See the picture illustration:

Just before you pick that call or start to text message and read, think  of positure ergonomics .


An area where positure ergonomics is needed the most is where it's either not recognized or neglected. Task that requires lifting and hoisting has very often impacted on the wellness of those involved. Whether you’ll be lifting and hoisting as a task or moving stuffs for recreation, positure ergonomics need not be neglected. It's very important to consider positure ergonomics when it has to do with lifting and hoisting. Why? You are either raising or pulling heavy object against your body weight and balance.

After a busy day of walking, standing and, working at a task, everyone answers nature's call to sleep at night. The sleep hours for an active average adult is placed at 6-8 hours. In this fast pace world , you and I know that we hardly get that. However, let's just assume it's an average of 6 hours sleep. Admittedly some experts have suggested that the position for sleeping is either on your back or on your left side. However, note that failure to give attention to positure ergonomics, there are chances we still come down with the same complications attributable to wrong positure in walking, standing, lifting and hoisting task. Take a close look at the sleeping positions on the illustrative diagram below. Can you make out the aspect of positure ergonomics in sleeping positions:

Positure ergonomics requires that the right kind of pillow and mattress is used for sleeping. Note the wrong and the right ways your head should rest either correctly lying on your left side or on your back.

Positure ergonomics applies to every activity that can impact your skeletal system that affects performance of your task at any job and enjoying your earnings from your hard work. Never feel you’re too old to try out positure ergonomics. Neither is it that you've gone too far with wrong positures for you to correct them now.
