“Your services are no longer required by the company”. Every economically viable individual desires to be gainfully employed and to remain productively employed till retirement. That is retirement either at the legal retirement age that is applicable in the economic country gainfully employed in or to become economically self He employed. Unexpectedly, the time comes when the desire to be gainfully employed is stopped abruptly . So many have had to absorb the statement either giving verbally or written “your services are no longer required by the company”. This sometimes happens at the prime of gainful employment or close to legal retiring age. Irrespective of when this happens, it is always not an easy pill to swallow. It is even more devastating when one is ill prepared for it.
This write up is not about job loss because of certain misconduct. However, what would be discussed here can equally be applied should that be the case.
A job loss, as devastating as it maybe is only a job loss. “Losing a job is one of life’s most stressful experiences. It’s normal to feel angry, hurt, or depressed, grieve at all that you’ve lost, or feel anxious about what the future holds. Job loss and unemployment involves a lot of change all at once, which can rock your sense of purpose and self-esteem when a good job is not done at it”. The first job after a job loss is to assure self that your set skills, experience and, certification are not lost with a job loss. The consuming fear is that you may not be able to survive in the new dispensation of not having a monthly income yet your responsibilities did not stop to be your responsibilities and even multiplying. This is a healthy natural fear.
Loss of a job places you on a new kind of job. The job of managing a job loss. What you do or did not do is a determining factor of whether you can land another job or become even self employed. You have to apply the same rules as when you’re gainfully employed to managing a job loss. Doing a good job at managing a job loss helps you retain your self-esteem. A job loss does not necessarily make you loose your self-esteem it is doing a bad job at managing a job loss that takes your self esteem away.
A job loss is similar to suffering a prolonged illness. Just as one looks forward to getting well from a prolonged illness, similarly one looks forward to becoming gainfully employed again. That focus is a drive for doing a good job at managing a job loss. It is also like a prolonged illness because you cannot predict how long you might stay unemployed. However, you can manage your action and reaction after a job loss.

A company may be experiencing a downward trend in their annual revenue over an extended period of time. This may warrant the company to reduce its overhead so as to meet up with the demand of its operating cost, and also be able to pay renumeration to few working staff. When it gets to this situation, management will have to make decision on which department may require the minutest or the most reduction of staff. The saddening phrase of “your services are no longer required by the company” may be giving to just anyone. It’s a case of if it was my company what will I do to keep my company afloat. With such a reasoning, it could be easy to start off the job of managing a job loss on a more rational note.
There are times the demand from the job may out weigh what our physical and emotional abilities can put up with. If management have switched your role, task and target in the best possible ways yet you are not able to meet up with the demand of the job then there is an obvious case of a job loss. So the thinking should be, am I personally convinced that my health condition does not allow me perform to the best of my ability? Would I keep someone employed who is seriously limited by a certain health condition? Taking time to think like this can reduce the amount of stress that is felt if this is the reason for a job loss.
There are obviously other rational reasons for experiencing a job loss. Whatever the reason may be, when not made out clearly in the mind it will have negative effect on the job at hand, managing the loss of a job.

Now you need to view your new job as important as the one you lost. While on the lost job, there were roles and rules, tasks and targets, awards and recognitions, and management of people. Reflect on those moments of your working life as the essence of secular accomplishments and let it be your pride.

This is personalized because when it comes to spirituality, there are diverse perceptions of what spirituality actually is. However there is a common understanding of an attachment to a divine source above what you can accomplish on your own.
There is an innate desire in all of us to do something of a divine nature. Ones we can identify what that is and latch onto it, there is always a resounding feeling of satisfaction and inner joy. This kind of feeling heals damaged emotions and helps not to fall into disrepair.

- Stepping stone not huddle – Moving forward is not just about forging ahead on uninterrupted but it is keeping a moving forward frame of mind even when you have a momentary stop. When driving on a highway, you may have slow downs and stops but none of it stopped you from reaching your destination. - Head above water – Your friends and colleagues will like to see that you are not drowning or have not drowned in the sea of loss of a job. The social media has giving such a rebranded possibility. Share positive reflections of yourself but don’t give a better than factual impression of yourself. Doing so can give you emotional pain than the renewed strength you should have gotten from it. In the long run, your friends and colleagues will perceive you as a role model.
- Be yourself – Do not suffer self emotional defeat when in the midst of your friends and colleagues. If you are known to be humorous, allow all around you to still enjoy that part of you. Whatever it is that makes you like-able to others don’t deprive them of it because of loss of a job.

Embrace New Opportunities
It is natural to desire picking up employment in the same industry you’re used to working. Spread your bread in many waters. A new type of employment opportunity will be an added job experience. At loss of a job, you’ll have so many business opportunities thrown at you. Majority recognize that at loss of a job you will have sufficient fund for investment. Some will come genuinely to help while some others will just want to have a piece of the apple pie.
Even if you do decide to invest, invest on something you have the passion for. If you allow someone else’s passion to drive your investment, you definitely have invested wrongly and that’s money down the drain.
Resolving not to waste the little resources you have will enable you take a meaningful look at whatever investment opportunities presented before you. When in doubt ask and ask again before agreeing to invest the only finance you are sure of.

Set Achievable Goals
Goals are luminous points of life. Settings goals makes you hopeful, gives something to live for. It may sound ridiculous to think of setting goals when there is no job. While still gainfully employed, not all your goals are centered around earning an income. In the job of managing a job loss, your goals should via away from monthly income since it’s no longer there.
Goals to set. One aspect that suffers earliest is immediate family relationship so it will be better to set a quick achievable goal in that direction and others will follow:
- Retain peace in the family – With no identifiable source of income, most who lost jobs relate like time bombs waiting to explode. If married, the wife suffers most of the accidental discharges or barrage of fits of anger. In other instance, it’s the woman that gets trigger ready to express her emotional grieve in fits of anger. Both party are going through the emotional pain of a job loss. The sooner both party recognizes that the better their marriage in a job loss situation. So as the one desiring to do a job at managing loss of a job, take the lead in retaining peace in the family.
- Re-bond with you wife – This is good for the married man. The years of leaving home very early and returning late at night is now behind you. If your wife owns a business of her own think of how you can contribute something meaningful to her business. You’ll have more time to cuddle on the bed instead of rushing out early to work. Some feels it will be challenging staying with a wife everyday but that’s not the case if both have a mutual understanding of what they are contending with, the loss of a job. So the only job on hand now is what both of you can build together.
- Keep family expenditure for just what is needed – No one can predict how long loss of a job would be. The only fund known is the one giving as payoff for job loss. Such fund should not be squandered for luxurious living. It is normal to desire the kind of life lived when gainfully employed but it’s time to deaden such desires.
- Plow back on previous investments – The longer the state of job loss the sooner you’ll need to make decisions on some investment to take care of your needs. One of such investment could be a life insurance policy. There may be mixed feelings between you and your spouse but you can reach an agreement of mutual understanding. Ensure that it’s with the intent of caring for an obvious need at the right time for it and not just for some uncontrolled desire to just catch in on some fun.
This is a task and the target is to set goals that will not put any financial strain on you.
Appraise and Reappraise your Situation
You may have counted hours, days, weeks, months and even years gone in a job loss. Have you done a good job at it? Are you still anxious about not having a monthly salary? Have you been able to set up something that keeps you occupied and possibly brings some income? Are you getting productive satisfaction from what you are practically able to do now? Some people find it rewarding to fall back on a certain hobby. That’s exactly what I did when I lost my job.

While employed you must have been used to appraisals but the only difference is that you are appraising yourself. Honest appraisal from your boss must have meant so much to you. You also need to give yourself a honest appraisal even in managing loss of a job.

It’s the company’s way of thanking you for your years of service and contrition to the company’s productivity. So have you done a good job of managing loss of a job. I did this every time I achieved a goal I have set when I lost my job.

If it rubs negatively on your family relationship, it’s even worse. So looking back if all your family members, friends and, acquaintances still see your presence a delight then you should give yourself a plaque. I’ll leave you to decide how you want to do that.
- Sustained opportunity – You are able to start off something new and you kept it going on and your passion for it is growing. You even brought on a paradigm shift on better ways to do what you never thought you’re able to do. That should impress so much on your ability and capacity. You deserve a plaque you should define by yourself.
This is an award and the recognition is that you have made a difference in managing a job loss.
When you do a good job at managing a job loss, you will feel you’re loosing another should you pick a job after a job loss. You’ll be better off also if you become self employed doing a good job of managing a job loss. Loss of a job does not necessarily make you loose your identity it is what you do or did not do that makes you loose your identity to.
