Knowledge Matriculation

“What do you Know? Most feel challenged when asked this question. Ironically, the one asking the question may not Know what he or she Knows.  We are living in the era of skepticism, everyone that encounters Knowledge of any kind must ask who, when, what and, why for such Knowledge to be assimilated and kept as a reference in the future.  Everyone seems to have individualistic or group opinion of what maybe going around as perceived Knowledge. What makes the difference is “what is Known as it should be Known and used” “– MekDanny

The desire for knowledge is innate with humankind.  At quite an early age, a newly born child will fix a stare at the mother’s eye to know her mood.  Parents tap into such natural inclination of gaining knowledge to start their young early in formal schooling.

Growing up, everyone takes responsibility for how, from whom, when, where, what and why knowledge of any kind is desired.  This is when every young man and woman show themselves responsible or not.  It starts from the early stages of learning to matriculating into learning and then to graduating into requisite learning.

Knowledge is said to be power but there is no strength in knowledge when it is misapplied or abused.  Wisdom, knowledge correctly applied, protects the one replete with knowledge.  All of this doesn’t come to be because there is an innate desire to acquire knowledge.  Deliberate effort is required to master and put in place the process of learning to acquire knowledge.  Such process is what is handed over in places of learning from elementary to any form of higher learning.

For the purpose of this write up, I will want to define matriculation as an enrollment into the process of acquiring knowledge, understanding and, skills. Every student in any form of elementary, higher or supplementary learning with the right motive to acquiring knowledge and understanding to benefit in the future, will learn against all odds, never undermining M A T R I C U L A T I O N – (i) Maintain Academic Tenacity, (ii) Retain Intellectual Capacity, (iii) Unparalleled Learning Ability and, (iv) Think Intuitively On Notions.  The letters forming the word matriculation, have been grouped in words of four (4) sets. Each set defines what it takes, agreeing to acquire knowledge and skills.  Each four (4) groups are identified as Resilience, Understanding, Rationalize, and Inquisitive.

So, to help all intending to acquire any skill and to those already going through skill acquisition, explaining this four groups will help in evaluating or reevaluate level of commitment required and preparedness to start and complete acquiring knowledgeable skills.

The first three (3) letters in the word matriculation forms three (3) words – Maintain Academic Tenacity.  These three (3) words narrows down to one-word Resilience.

Maintain Academic Tenacity

Knowledge empowers only if taking in its entirety.  There is always excitement at the onset of starting the process of knowledge acquisition, but such excitement is tested with the passage of time into learning.

Some quit at the very elementary stage of acquiring knowledge either for reason or for some of these limiting factors or some sort of childish and youthful exuberance. For those who have made up their minds to acquire some form of accreditable knowledge, there are moments when it seems impossible to continue.  This is when resilience is required.  The inner strength to continue or bounce back to acquire knowledge and requisite skill for future challenges.

Learning is fascinating but can also be challenging.  Some of the challenges of learning can be inter-personal, economic, social stigma, academic expectations, peer pressure, sexual harassment, maybe you can recall what else can pose a challenge.

Inter-personal: A person’s overall self-appraisal of his/her capacity to learn and assimilate knowledge for appropriate understanding, if low, can result in self-withdrawal.  Now old on!  It is called self-appraisal.  Are you defective in the way you appraise yourself? Seemingly! While it’s okay to compare your grades with those of you peers, it does not mean you cannot measure up to assimilate.  It is best to identify your strong learning areas.  What makes them strong?  Can such be used in the learning areas that you are weak?  Every average human has the same amount of brain cells.  The only difference is that our environment and opportunities develop the amount of brain power we have for learning.

So, we all do not develop brain power at the same pace. Identify your pace and start developing your brain power.  Do not quit learning!

Economic: Many learning to gain requisite skills will admit meeting up with the fees for learning pose’s lots of challenge.  Those sponsored by parents or guardians must balance their academic need and any desire for social gratification.  Some parents or guardians can but struggle under severe economic hardship to meet up with the tuition fees for learning.  Some not desiring to quit learning and in appreciation for the effort of their parents or guardians, who are struggling under the yoke of the tuition fees, have looked for legal means of helping to reduce the burden on their parents or guardians.  Any illegal means taking to continue learning comes around to erase any form of learning that has been acquired.

Social Stigma: It could be racial, status, culture or tribe and, language.  Being discriminated at can be emotional rending.  It can be so intense in some cases that the quickest escape will be to quit learning.  Not so fast!  That anyone discriminates you is not your fault.  The person is driving by his/her inferiority complex.  People discriminate because their personality cannot get them the recognition they desire.  So, they discriminate to suppress others better quality for their inferior quality to shine.  If you quit learning because of discrimination, you are allowing into the society and economy inferior personalities.

Academic Expectations:  The demand from tutors, mentors and, parents or guardians to excel in learning can become overbearing on you at times.  Class attendance, text, exams, projects can all come rushing in and it may start to appear to be one too many. Do you know all of that is getting you ready for the real world?  Starting and finishing every class, text, exams and, projects fine tune you for real life situations in the future without getting bewildered. Don’t quit learning because of the volume of curriculum. Like weeding a grassland, only look at immediate class, text, exams and, projects as they come and never worry about the ones yet and that may not come up.

Peer Pressure: There is positive and negative peer pressure.  When peer pressure is positive that drives to learning excellence, you will be glad you got the push from your peers.  Negative peer pressure that drives towards unwholesome acts, if when engaged in, leaves such individual with feelings of worthlessness.  Refusal to engage in negative peer pressure will result in bullying and marginalization by your peers.

So, it’s time to quit learning?  Not if you take a closer look at what is missing in those peers pressuring you for negative reasons. Those peers pressuring you for negative reasons lack moral dignity.  So, they want to get others of their peers painted black as they are.  While not giving in to their pressure, value your moral dignity.  If the pressure is becoming overly worrisome, make a formal report to the closest authority.

Sexual Harassment:  This term often is inclined towards females.  What is discussed here equally applies to males who may be sexually harassed.  The rate of debauchery observable in places of learning leaves so much to be concerned about.  Sexual harassment can be from peers of from instructors.  Sexual harassment has sometimes led to coercion to sexual intercourse.  This really can rob victims of dignity to the extent that it can impact on their overall perception of learning.

Some governmental authorities have put mitigations in place to restrict any with such perverse intention in check.  So, if you observe anyone with an incline to sexual harass, do not hesitate to make formal report of it to the closest authority.  Do not get harassed out of learning.  It is the guilty person that does not have a place in the learning process.

Set personal realistic immediate and long-term goals to take you through learning process.

Retain Intellectual Capacity

The next three letters of the word matriculation underscores Understanding.  Recall when discussing resilience, mention was made of brain power and that as much as every average human have the same amount of brain cells, we don’t develop brain power at the same time and pace.

Most make the mistake of competing with the performance of their peers who does well while writing a test, an examination or preparing a project.  I said make the mistake.  Why? The value of competing with a peer while learning is to know how the peer study to understand.  Understanding does not come because one reads through pages of learning materials but because the one studying has engaged the process of understanding.

Understanding has identified process – mental reflection, assimilation, retention and, recollection.

Mental Reflection:  Another word for this is meditation. While studying find yourself in the thoughts and perception of the context of what you are studying either when reading or listening to a lecture.  Like a mental mirror in front of you, see all the details to what is to be understood in all its entirety.

Assimilation:   This requires perceiving where the new understanding gained relates to previous understanding.  Make the new understanding part of your thoughts, allow it to be part of your outlook. Some undergoing the process acquiring knowledge leave studying until when it’s time for a test or an examination.  Anything studied at such time only, will not be kept after the test or examination.  Better to be consistent with studying to gain understanding that is required for life after the process of gaining knowledge.  If assimilation is followed in this manner, you will not need to spend hours unending reading close to a test or examination.

Retention:  Will understanding remain with you?  It depends on the value attached to and what use is identified for such understanding.  So, while studying, look beyond passing a test, an examination and, preparing a project for knowledge accreditation.  Find answer for yourself within to the questions: why do I need to understand this concept, terminology, perception? What part of my future will this have a bearing?  Find a reason why the understanding should remain with you permanently.

Recollection:   It is of no value having knowledge and understanding if does not impact on perception of our environment and life itself. “Did you go through learning or learning go through you”. When an individual’s words, reasoning, action and reaction is anything short of one that have gone through the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding it engenders this thought of the one claiming to have knowledge and understanding. Gaining knowledge and understanding should not last only to be successful any form of test of knowledge and understanding. Knowledge and understanding gained today should shape who we are tomorrow.

“Understanding today why learning should be understood

brings knowledge of tomorrow better understood” – MekDanny

Be absorbed in all there is in the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding.

Unparalleled Learning Ability

It takes real effort to learn something new or improve on what has been learnt previously, being able to rationalize every study.  How many hours is best spent on learning?  While it might be appropriate to consider duration of study, what is most important is the quality of study within the duration.

Better to find and keep a learning pattern that works for you.  Also, good to review your adopted pattern that it is giving value for learning.  Some have telegraphic memory such that they hardly will spend too much time studying while others may spend hours upon hours trying to grab the sense of what is studied.

Some study methods that have benefited most matriculated into learning process are:

  1. Do not leave study till its test or examination time.
  2. Draw up a schedule for study
  3. Make a brief mental review of what is learnt at the end of each study class
  4. While studying, have a note or jotter to put points you have clearly understood. Add to the points meanings of words you are not familiar with.
  5. As you go about other activities, call up to mind what had been previously understood. Give thought to anything around you that illustrates the understanding gotten.
  6. Look for someone you can discuss the points studied with. If it’s someone that can ask you questions that will give you further insight to the points, better.
  7. Loop new study with previously understood studies

“Learning fortifies intellectual power but that power stays fortified holding on to methods of studying that fortifies it” – MekDanny

Think Intuitively On Notions

The process of gaining knowledge and understanding requires you to be inquisitive about what is learnt in the light of knowing accurately.  Why must you trouble yourself with ascertaining the accuracy of what is learnt when it is one with the faculty of the knowledge dispensing it?

The reason for asking should not be to boost your ego but to get an overall view of the knowledge dispensed.  At times the feeling might be that certain questions on your mind are not worth asking or you worry that your peers may laugh at you.  The truth is the questions you did not ask could be the reason you are not understanding what is handed out as knowledge that should be understood. So, to be inquisitive while going through learning process do the following:

  1. While studying or reflecting on a knowledge, note down in writing questions that come up on your mind.
  2. With the questions still fresh on your mind, look back at what you have written down previously on the thought to see if it clarifies the question on your mind.
  3. If still not clarified in any previous writings, be prepared to ask either in classroom setting or someone you reckon can give clarity to your question.
  4. Write the clarity beside the question you have written down earlier.
  5. Think through the clarity one more time and see if draws further questions on your mind. If it does attempt proffering answer yourself by making personal research.
  6. Again, go back and write your additional understanding below the earlier clarity. Go back to it as often as possible until the main idea becomes part of your personality.

“Being inquisitive does not kill but passes an individual over what could have killed for not being inquisitive” – MekDanny

When knowledge is taught at any level, ask questions to get an all-round understanding, rationalize in your thoughts to be to make you clearly understand and, keep such an attitude throughout the duration of your learning process.
